How Genealogy Societies Can Master Organic Social Media (No Ads Required)

If your historical or genealogical society has ever posted on social media and felt like you were shouting into the void, you’re not alone. Organic reach can feel unpredictable, but it’s far from dead.

Here’s what I've learned and how your society can start using organic social media strategies that actually work.

Why Organic Social Media Still Matters for Societies

While paid ads have their place, most local or nonprofit history organizations don’t have big marketing budgets. That’s why organic social media, content you post without paying to promote, is essential.

With billions of users across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, and LinkedIn, social media remains a powerful way to:

  • Grow your local or niche audience

  • Drive interest in your events, projects, or preservation efforts

  • Connect with younger generations discovering their roots

But to make organic work, you have to play by the platforms’ rules and their algorithms definitely have opinions.

What Social Media Algorithms Love (and Hate)

Let’s start with what helps your content shine:

Genuine Comments & Shares: Posts that spark real conversations or get shared in DMs are pure gold across platforms.

Meaningful Reactions: Not just likes, think “loves,” “wows,” saves, and thoughtful replies.

Native Content: Every platform favors content that keeps people inside their ecosystem. That means using their tools: Reels on Instagram, Stories on Facebook, polls on LinkedIn, or carousel posts instead of just dumping links.

Diverse Formats: Mix it up! Text posts, photo albums, short videos, live streams—variety keeps audiences engaged.

What to avoid?

🚫 Clickbait & Bait Tactics: Algorithms are smart; “You won’t believe what happened next!” rarely works and can even hurt your reach.

🚫 Link Overload: Posts that just push people off-platform (especially without context) often get buried. Lead with value, not just links.

Formats That Spark Engagement

You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, just repurpose your stories and research into formats each platform loves:

  • Short-Form Video (<90 sec): Quick tips, ancestor fun facts, or behind-the-scenes clips work wonders.

  • Polls & Quizzes: Ask followers fun, easy-to-answer questions: “Which decade would you visit if you had a time machine?” or “What’s your top research frustration?”

  • Carousel Posts / Photo Albums: Great for showing off cemetery projects, archival finds, or family snapshots.

  • Stories (FB, IG, LinkedIn): Perfect for “day in the life” glimpses or sneak peeks.

  • Live Streams: Still one of the best engagement drivers. Tease your live ahead of time and invite your audience to bring questions.

Bonus tip: Tools like StreamYard let you host interview-style Lives across multiple platforms.

Tactics That Build True Community

Think beyond broadcasting—think conversation engineering. Here’s how:

  1. Ask Boardroom-Style Questions: “If we could only fund one project next year, what should it be?” or “What keeps you up at night when it comes to research?”

  2. Tap Into Your Audience’s Pains & Doubts: Address what genealogists struggle with—brick walls, missing records, overwhelm. Make them feel seen.

  3. Celebrate Engaged Followers: Notice who comments regularly. Shout them out, tag them, or invite them to share their own anecdotes.

  4. Lean Into Groups & Communities: Niche groups on Facebook, Instagram close friends, or LinkedIn communities are where deep engagement happens.

What’s New in 2025?

🚀 Broadcast Channels (Instagram, Facebook): Great for big pages or creators to send mass updates (note: often requires a large follower base).

🧩 Professional Mode (Profiles on Meta Platforms): Good for society leaders or genealogists building personal brands alongside the society’s.

🎯 Stars & Small Donations (Lives & Videos): Enable donations or “Stars” features on Lives to raise funds directly from your community.

Lead with Value, Stay Human

The secret to organic success isn’t flashy gimmicks—it’s value. Every post should:

  • Make your audience feel something

  • Teach something useful

  • Connect people to others or to a larger mission

And remember, you don’t have to be a social media expert to succeed. You just need to stay human, helpful, and a little bit strategic.

It’s Not About Algorithms—It’s About People

Behind every like, comment, or share is someone curious about history, passionate about family stories, or eager to connect with their roots. Organic social media marketing isn’t just about reach—it’s about relationships.

So start where you are. Experiment. Listen. Engage. And most of all, share the stories only your society can tell.

Let's keep the conversation going!
