In the genealogy world, mentorship isn’t just helpful, it’s essential. Whether you’re brand new to family history or decades into your research, there’s always more to learn. And sometimes, what we really need isn’t another record - it’s a person who says, “Let me walk with you.”
The cool part? Social media has cracked mentorship wide open.💬 Facebook groups, Instagram reels, YouTube comments, even TikTok, these are the new front porches of genealogy learning.
I’ve seen beginners get unstuck with just one kind reply. I’ve had my own “aha” moments thanks to generous folks who took the time to answer a question, share a resource, or offer encouragement when I was stuck behind a brick wall, literally and emotionally.
🙏 Today I’m shouting out Mt Vernon Genealogical Society community, whose generosity, insight, and patience made a difference in my journey.
If you're looking for mentorship:➡️ Start by asking. Post in groups, comment on content, or DM someone whose work inspires you.➡️ Be open about where you're stuck or what you want to learn. People love helping, especially when they know how.
If you’re ready to be a mentor:🌱 Look for someone just starting out. Share your favorite tools. Invite them into your process.🌟 Remember, mentorship isn’t about being perfect, it’s about showing up and being willing to help.
🔄 Pay it forward: Who could you encourage or support today? Drop a helpful comment, offer to walk someone through a research method, or simply say “You’re doing amazing.”
We grow stronger when we grow together. And that, my friends, is the root of community.
I was so lucky to fall into a structured mentorship early on. Having someone to give advice and open doors has been invaluable in the first few years of business. I can't wait to be successful enough to pay it forward some day!
