Nurturing Through Newsletters - Building Genuine Connections Beyond the Feed

Updated: Jul 11

We spend a lot of time growing our social media presence, but here’s the truth: we don’t own those spaces. Social platforms? We're just leasing space. And sometimes the algorithm forgets to show our content to the very people who want to see it.

That’s why newsletters matter.

For historical and genealogical societies, newsletters are more than updates, they’re community builders. They create a consistent, trusted touchpoint with members, supporters, and curious minds. For individual genealogists? A newsletter can be your direct line to the people who care about your journey.

I’ve seen this firsthand through my own newsletter, Genealogy & The Social Sphere. It’s become one of my favorite ways to nurture my community. It’s where I get to share insights, resources, encouragement, and where I hear back from readers who felt seen or inspired. That two-way connection is powerful.

While social media lets us be personal, newsletters let us go deeper. They’re a space to reflect, teach, and invite genuine conversation, without worrying if the algorithm will let our message through.

And the best part? You own your email list. It’s yours. That’s powerful in a digital world where platforms can change overnight.

So whether you’re a society looking to grow engagement or a family historian sharing your discoveries, consider starting a newsletter. It doesn’t have to be long or fancy. Just honest, consistent, and from the heart.

📬 Want to see what I mean? Check out Genealogy & The Social Sphere—my monthly dose of strategy, community, and encouragement for the genealogy community.

A fairly good point. Assuming the newsletters are being opened and read, and that email programs, such as gmail, don't drop them into obscure tabs that subscribers miss. I hope you're enjoying the A to Z Challenge. Please check out the giveaway on my blog.

Thanks, J! You make a great point, newsletter deliverability and visibility can definitely be tricky. That’s why it’s helpful to remind readers to check their “Promotions” tab or add us to their contacts. A quick social media post pointing them to check their inbox can also boost engagement. A little planning (and outreach!) really does make a difference. 😊

I’m really enjoying the A to Z Challenge. It's such a fun way to stay inspired and connect with fellow creatives. I’ll be sure to check out your giveaway! - Jon Marie Pearson | The Simple Living Genealogist

I struggle with my newsletter, but I agree it can be a great way to nourish a relationship with readers. @samanthabwriter from Balancing Act

I totally relate, Samantha! I’ve had to rework my newsletter several times since I started it almost four years ago. It’s definitely a learning process! The trick is not to stop experimenting. Try different formats, tones, or topics, and don’t be afraid to ask readers for feedback. That back-and-forth can be so helpful in finding what really clicks. 💌 Keep going, you’re not alone!
