Let’s be real, trying to juggle multiple social media platforms as a genealogist or history-focused organization can feel like a full-time job. Instagram, Facebook, Threads, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok… the list keeps growing. And with each one, there’s this pressure: “Should I be on that too?”
As a social media manager, I get it. I’ve felt it.
But here’s what I’ve learned. You don’t have to be everywhere to make an impact.
🎭 The Pros of Being on Multiple Platforms
You expand your reach - different platforms = different audiences.
You can repurpose content and maximize visibility.
Some platforms are better for certain content types (Instagram = visual stories, YouTube = long-form video, LinkedIn = professional credibility, etc.).
🤹♀️ The Cons of Juggling Too Much
Burnout is real - especially if you’re managing social solo.
Your content may feel stretched thin or inconsistent.
It’s easy to lose track of engagement and audience connection if you're constantly switching platforms.
💡 So… What Should You Do?
Here’s my take. It’s okay to focus on one platform at a time. In fact, I often recommend it - especially for individuals, small teams, or societies with limited time and energy.
Focusing on one platform allows you to:
Learn what works and build consistency.
Build a strong, engaged audience before branching out.
Avoid the overwhelm that makes you want to quit altogether.
Ask yourself:
Where is your audience already active?
What kind of content do you enjoy creating?
Where do you feel most comfortable connecting?
Your answer doesn’t have to be trendy, it just needs to be true to you and your community.
🎯 Start Where You’re Strong
Pick one platform and give it your energy. Once you’ve built confidence and rhythm, then consider expanding. Remember: social media is a tool, not a taskmaster.
Whether you're managing your own account or helping your society build a presence, it’s all about balance, sustainability, and real connection.
