Some of the best content isn’t created by us—it’s created with us. One of the greatest joys in genealogy is discovering how connected we all are and how sharing pieces of our family histories can bring new depth to our own research. I’m incredibly grateful for the stories, photos, and memories others have shared that have brought new layers to my journey of uncovering my ancestors' lives.
In the genealogy world, user-generated content (UGC) is an invaluable resource. It allows us to connect with others who are on similar paths, exchanging insights and finding common threads that enhance our understanding of history. Whether it’s a family story someone shares, a photo of an ancestor you hadn’t seen before, or a heartfelt quote that ties into a piece of research, these contributions enrich our collective knowledge and bring our family histories to life in ways we couldn’t do alone.
For example, one of the most exciting moments for me came when a fellow genealogist shared an old family photograph that tied into a line I had been researching. With their permission, I was able to add this new piece of the puzzle to my research, and it changed the way I looked at that branch of my family tree. The image wasn’t just a photo—it was a new doorway into the past that connected us in ways that go beyond names and dates.
📷 Feature a story, image, or quote from someone in your community (with permission!). It’s amazing how even the smallest details can help others see their own history in a new light. And when you share these contributions, it’s a way to honor the people who’ve helped shape your research journey.
User-generated content also goes beyond just sharing individual stories. It can be a collaborative effort, where you invite others to share their thoughts, memories, and findings. This helps create a sense of community where everyone’s voice is heard, and each contribution adds to the rich tapestry of shared family histories.
🧩 How do you invite your followers to contribute to your storytelling? I encourage my followers to share their own discoveries and insights. Whether it’s through a simple question on social media, inviting them to comment with family photos or memories, or hosting a community storytelling event, getting others involved can make the genealogy journey even more rewarding.
The power of user-generated content in genealogy spaces is clear—it’s a way for all of us to learn, connect, and grow together. Each shared story, image, and memory enriches the overall picture of our collective past. And by inviting others to contribute, we ensure that the history we uncover is shared and appreciated by all.
