This past weekend, I finally carved out some time to explore the FamilySearch Community, and I was surprised by how much is packed into it!
First, I gave my profile page a refresh (because, you know, why not?). Then I headed into three key sections: Ask a Question, Community News, and Groups.
When I clicked on Ask a Question, I found thousands of active discussions happening! People were asking everything from how to navigate FamilySearch Centers to tips on managing account settings, jumping into projects, and so much more. It’s a treasure trove of Q&A, basically, no matter your genealogy puzzle, someone’s probably already talking about it.
Next, I checked out the Community News section. Here you can see what’s trending across the platform and can even bookmark the threads you want to revisit later. And get this: all your bookmarks and joined groups pop up in the Quick Links section, making it super easy to jump back in.
Now, let’s talk Groups - this was the most exciting part for me! I joined a whole bunch, including:
AI Enhanced, Ask a Help Chatbot, AI Research Assistant (yes, please! I’m so curious about how AI can boost family history research!)
German Research, England Research, Canada Research, Genetic/DNA Genealogy Research, Genealogical Events and Organizations, Mid-West States Research, Surname Specific Family History Research, Ireland Research, and Archives Matter
These groups are fantastic for collaborating, sharing resources, and just nerding out over family history topics with like-minded people. I’ve already added a task to my weekly to-do list: spend time exploring FamilySearch Community once a week.
One thing I really appreciated is the Community Code of Conduct. It’s all about keeping the space positive and helpful, encouraging everyone to:
✅ Be kind, friendly, respectful, and welcoming
✅ Show understanding and patience
✅Stay constructive and relevant
✅ Post as if you’re chatting with your dear grandmother (I love that rule!)
✅ Stay on topic, or start a new post if you need to shift
✅ Keep discussions healthy and positive
It honestly feels like a space where people want to help each other succeed.
I’m excited to make the FamilySearch Community part of my genealogy journey, and honestly, I can’t wait to see who I connect with next!
👉 Have you checked out the FamilySearch Community page yet? What groups have you joined? I’d love to hear what’s helping you on your research path! Let’s share and grow together. 🌿
