I never realized that I had the option to live a simple life. We can not go back and change how we live our lives, but we can change how we live our life from this moment on. It is never too late to change how we are living our lives. It takes us wanting to change our lives and knowing the reason behind wanting to change our lives. The way we lived our life in the past should not be looked at as mistakes. There could be some bad choices we made, but our past made us who we are today. I know I definitely made my fair share of mistakes.
I spent most of my life trying to figure out who I am and what I want in life. I struggled to feel like I fit in anywhere. There was an evening in 2008 that I was on a dinner date with my late husband and I remember he asked me what I wanted in my life for me. I did not really have an answer for him but told him that I just saw myself raising our four children and supporting him in his military career. He did not push any further but told me he hoped I at least finished earning my bachelor's degree. (Which I did by the way in 2019.) This was the last dinner date we went on before he deployed to Iraq and it would be the last time he was able to ask me what I wanted in life. He was killed fairly early in his deployment. I wish he could ask me now because now that I am living a simpler life I truly see what I want in my life.
About two years ago I began my journey of living a simpler life. I came across a podcast by The Minimalists. For the first time since my husband's death, I found clarity in what I wanted to do with my life. I want to live a simple life so that I could live a life I felt I was meant to. I want to travel and experience more of the world, as well as helping others learn how to discover their family history, and develop a personal connection to our world's history.
A simple life has given me the confidence to start thinking about what I want for myself in my life and to let go of those things that are holding me back. I am able to think more clearly because my mind is not cluttered with things, negativity, or people's ideas of what I should be doing. I have the confidence probably for the first time in my life to truly be me.
I am gaining the freedom to focus on building a life that I want. My goal of being getting healthy and becoming 100% debt-free is a work in progress. I know that I will get there eventually because they are things that I want in my life for me. My business is slowly growing and I am okay with that because I want to build my business with a community of people who share similar values of a desire to live a simple life, have a yearning to never stop learning, an aspiration to explore the world around us and love the idea of discovering their ancestors. Those are all things that I want in my life.
A simple life gave me the clarity I needed to begin living a life a want. I strongly believe that it is a simple lifestyle that can help anyone gain confidence and freedom to see what they truly want in their life.
I would love to hear from others as to how a simple life has changed their lives. You can comment below and send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Until next time, take care.
